I hope my students view me as a model of the passionate
lifelong learner. I am never finished
.I am in continual
pursuit of new ideas and relish those that challenge my status
quo. Kathi believes that teachers must be models for
what they admire in others, take what they know and what they
learn and then apply that to the diverse talents, needs and
learning styles of their students. After 28 years of teaching,
Kathi has found that the metaphor for teaching that best works
for her is that of studio director. Think of a sculpture
studio where the lesson for the week is to construct a head
showing a certain emotion. Each head would be different, and
all would benefit from the multiple responses to the lesson.
The class would require only the best work because each student
would have ownership and be committed to his own decision
making among options and choices. Reflection and awareness
would lead to independence and lifelong passion and skill.
As the teacher, Kathi direct(s) the construction of
knowledge, constantly gauging the pulse of the class through
a variety of creative, continuous and contextualized assessments.
The results allow me to create curriculum around particular
needs through mini-lessons and relevant projects.
Kathi received her Bachelors degree in English from
the University of Oregon, a Masters from Portland State
University in Literature and a Masters in Rhetoric from
NAU. She continues her education at NAU and Coconino Community
College.
