  • “When the children see me asking questions, searching for answers, taking classes, and getting excited when I learn something new or solve a problem, they know I truly mean what I tell them. I try to model for them how to be a life-long learner. We live in a society of instant gratification, and I feel that we have forgotten that really worthwhile dreams often take hard work. We have forgotten this in our relationships with others and we have forgotten this in our daily lives.”
  • ∑ Ms. Lara was instrumental in establishing the Walker Observatory in Flagstaff. “I am …amazed at how our community rallied to support this project! I learned about plans as I worked with architects to find a suitable site for the observatory and about building permits as I worked with the City to revise the plans. I worked with a contractor who taught me about rebar, AB fill, sauna tubes, pouring cement and electrical wiring and with the State Department of Transportation to obtain a special permit to move the 13’ dome along I-40 from Holbrook to Flagstaff. I continue to work with an NAU astronomer as we align the telescope to polar north, collimate the mirrors of the telescope, form a holder for the solar filters and connect a CCD (charged-couple device) which will capture images through the telescope.”
  • “I think education is much like building a house. It is a gift to be creative and plan the house of your dreams, but that house will never get built until you pick up a hammer and begin pounding a few nails.”

Ms. Lara graduated from Northern Arizona University with a Bachelors Degree in Early Childhood Development. She earned a Masters Degree in Elementary Education from NAU and has completed many hours of post-graduate courses at NAU and the University of Hawaii.
