- “I know that young students benefit not only from
the gifts our community gives to them, but are empowered
when they give to others. Each year, we choose a way to
help those in need. Last year, my 26 third graders worked
during recess, lunch, and in class to make American flag
pins that they marketed and sold. We donated over $1700
profit to the victims of 911 and Motorola matched our donation.
It was perhaps one of the highest points of my teaching
career when we counted the money we had raised and 8 year
old Madeline said, ‘After doing this, I feel like
I can do anything!’”
- “A well-educated person is one who is not only
able, but also eager to contribute to society, using all
of his or her strengths. It is, therefore, the responsibility
of an educator to create an environment where all children
have the opportunity to explore, develop, share and refine
their ideas in a supportive, interactive environment.”
- “It is critical that teachers inform the public
about the positive experiences that occur in their schools
each day. We need to educate the public about the validity
and effectiveness of new curriculum with which the public
are unfamiliar….When the public realizes the enormous
challenge before us, and the enthusiasm with which we embrace
this challenge, they too will embrace it. It all begins
with an invitation from one teacher.”
